Carol Shimp has written a captivating biography. The story was well written and inspirational in so many ways. I enjoyed taking a glimpse into her life and can relate to her spiritual gifts. Well worth reading!

Karou journeys into other realms in search of teeth for Brimstone, her adoptive father. The teeth are highly prized and bartered away for wishes. Karou is highly adept at gaining teeth as she travels in various missions though the journey is often riddled in danger. Karou is smart, sassy and very adept in her services, while on the other hand she enjoys going to private art school in Prague with an amazing talent as a gifted artist. But even though Karou is happy and loyal to her family, she is also riddled with questions of who she is and how she came to live with her mystical family. Her tattoos are mysteries in themselves. The story takes a turn when Akiva, enters the scene, an angel intent on killing Karou and stopping the teeth trade. But Akiva can't fulfill his plans to harm Karou due to her uncanny similarity to his lost love and soon the two find themselves caught up in forbidden romance set amongst the conflict between good and evil. DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE is a wonderful read filled with a colorful cast of characters that are woven and spread throughout an enchanting world of the writer's creative imagination. The author weaves both mystery and intrigue into every chapter with captivating descriptions that tease the mind. I really enjoyed this book with its forbidden love story and look forward to seeing more from this talented author.

In this futuristic thriller, spunky Nettie Matterville is off to begin her training to become a soldier for the Alliance, training for war at Europa Site G against the Union forces, whose planets are ruled by a brutal dictator. The Union planets have no independence, the people no voice. Younger sister, Rinny Matterville also begins her training for the Democratic Alliance. Both women have committed themselves to a cause, but the way is both brutal and demanding and not just from the enemy, but sometimes within their ranks. Friends are made along the way, budding romance. But war is pitiless. Heart breaking. It will take everything the sisters got just to survive.

With her keen ability, Norris has an eye for detail. The writer sets up a vivid picture of Mars and the solar system. Both Nettie and Rinny are engaging characters with strong emotional bonds. And they will need it just to get through the horrors of war and losing one another. As women, they face discrimination, torture and sexual harassment. They will be tested for strength and endurance in the harshest circumstances. The supporting characters are compelling, adding flair to the story. "DUTY AND DEVOTION" is interesting, distinctive. The writing is smooth and flows nicely chapter after chapter. The scenes are both vibrant and imaginative. The author has done a fine job of digging into her imagination and producing a fine product. I enjoyed this interesting book. A good read for science fiction fans!

As a child, I had a vivid imagination and many imaginary playmates. I read anything I could get my hands on and wanted to write books like Laura Ingalls.

In high school, I aspired to become a writer. But life for me took a different turn. I married young and had 2 small boys before I could blink an eye and began helping my husband achieve his own goals. So writing took a back seat as I concentrated on running an excavating business. Along the way, we had four more children, making us a family of 8.

Whew! Still, I wrote in my spare time, writing mostly poetry. As my children grew, I wrote my first novel. It was 150 pages long. I sent a sample to an agent, who remarkedly called me and told me I had talent. He said my book needed to be about 350 pages and that I needed to learn to polish my material. I was thrilled.

So… I took some writing courses, learned how to write, edit and polish. I met a teacher and author, who took me under her wing and showed me how to use POV as well as keep a story flowing. Her influence has greatly helped me in the way a college never could. “THE POND” was half written when I began my schooling and I finished the book in 2007.

I have 2 more books that I am currently working on. I would have to say that my writing a novel comes second nature to me and the challenge now is writing the perfect query letter. It’s amazing how I can write 400 pages of a novel and yet struggle with that one single letter.

But I’m finally figuring it out. OR so I think!

Subliminal events that evoke feelings of “Hometown”

Summers always remind me of celebrations and gatherings especially when I was a kid. The frequency just seemed to naturally come in quick succession. There’s Mayday, the last day of school, summer camp, Fourth of July, country fairs and family vacations. All of these events make me think of warm weather and good times.

As I was writing “The Pond,” I wanted to build upon the idea of creating an ambiance that spoke to the memories of home that we all share. After all, if readers can’t relate to the subject of your story, then the story will be spoken but never heard. One of those memories for me was going to the fair each year. The whiff of cotton candy and candied apples while walking well-worn paths to the Ferris wheel and other rides all come flooding back to me. I am betting that you recall the same general memories too. Those types of memories are what help to shape a story like “The Pond.”

I’ll be writing more posts about “relate-able” events and memories because I think they are an important part in telling a story that has plot lines and situations that are horrifying. Most people don’t experience some of the events that Michael Adams and his family did in their new home. Tying the common thread among us helps to bring the reader along for the ride and experience a roller coaster of emotions.

Panic Attacks

According to Wikipedia, the definition of a “Panic Attack” is as follows:

"Panic attacks" are very sudden, discrete periods of intense anxiety, mounting physiological arousal, fear, stomach problems and discomfort that are associated with a variety of somatic and cognitive symptoms. The onset of these episodes is typically abrupt, and may have no obvious triggers.

If you have ever suffered from one of these attacks, you will quickly discover that there is nothing psychosomatic about this disorder. It seems that at one time or another, everyone has experienced some form of a panic attack. I know some friends who have difficulty with this horrible attack and the experience can be terrifying.

The type of attacks can vary by including one or a combination of feelings or physical agitation:
Trembling, fear, rapid breathing, feeling of having a heart attack, heart racing, sweating and mind racing and a host of other types of emotions and physical feelings.

Sometimes, describing a fearful situation can bring on a panic attack…in my book, “The Pond,” I wrote the main characters to have similar experiences with panic attacks that they never had before. Why? Perhaps just reading about a panic attack can bring one on. The only cure is to buy a copy of the book, “The Pond” and read it!

Are You Affected by Local Legends where a Young Boy drowned in a Pond?

When I was growing up, legend around town was that a certain old bridge hidden by foliage from the road was “haunted.” I don’t know if it is fact, but people’s curiosity confirmed that if nothing else, the mystique was there. Legend was that a young mother was walking over a bridge one day, lost her footing and accidentally dropped her child in the water below. And, according to the locals, her ghost walks the bridge searching for her child. Curious onlookers (usually teenagers) still visit the bridge and listen for the sounds of her steps.

This type of folklore has always intrigued me. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to put this type of theme in “The Pond.” The idea that a legend can sustain and thrive in this day and age simply by word of mouth from generation to generation rekindles the art form of storytelling. Think back to your past; do you remember folklore in your hometown? When you read “The Pond” it will make you wonder whether the folklore is fact or fiction.

I read this book during a summer vacation at Sea Isle City, NJ. I had visited Cape May and just love the quaint historic town. I bought this book more to learn about Cape May's history, but ended up loving the spooky details. The ghostly encounters were engaging, thought provoking. I liked touring some of the places mentioned in the book. It was a great beach read, though this book can be enjoyed any time of the year.

With Winter already starting in certain areas there are important and helpful tips to know if "The Pond" is safe for play. Snow and Ice can be fun to play in but, you also need to be prepared for the dangers that also exist.

You must realize that there is not really any such thing as a "safe pond"! There are precautions that always need to be taken.
Be sure to have an emergency plan in place in case you run into trouble
The safety of the ice is dependant on many factors, not just one
Stay safer when you are around ice on "The Pond" when the area is checked frequently by the authorities
Observe the ice on "The Pond" for cracks, breaks, weak spots before taking your venture
Test the thickness of "The Pond" before proceeding
Stay in a group in case one of you get in trouble while playing or walking on "The Pond"

#1 Most Read Blog Post is - "Quirky Characters," Why are they there?

Have you ever read a book and became immediately taken with the plot and characters? I love those types of books and I also love it when “quirky” characters begin to show themselves, offering a bit of diversion from the main story.

At first, it almost seems like this odd character is there to simply interrupt the process of the story. But, on second take, it can be other things.

For example, in the classic novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the main story is one of Atticus Finch, an idealistic lawyer, who defends a black man wrongly accused of a crime against a white woman in a small southern town. The story is set in the early 1920’s somewhere in the southern United States. The gist of the story is how Finch is able to open the eyes of his community just a bit to the injustices of prejudice and ignorance.

Then…somewhere in the middle of the story, Finch is driving his daughter, Scout downtown but suddenly stops on the road. A group of men have surrounded a dog, claiming it is rabid. They turn to Finch and ask, “What should we do?” Why do you suppose the author put this strange interruption in this story?
It’s not an interruption after all; it’s driving the point home. The rabid dog symbolizes the town’s bigotry, thereby causing a dangerous situation. Atticus Finch symbolizes justice and takes the appropriate action of putting down the dog, which simply points out that he was able to bring understanding to his hometown.

I tried to do the same thing with “The Pond.” Sprinkled throughout, you will see odd characters which seem to interrupt the action. Stop a moment and wonder if I am driving home a point.

Although “The Pond” is a thriller and “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a novel, this type of writing style works well in virtually any genre.

THE GLASS CASTLE is a wonderful, engaging story. I found myself feeling like part of the family and yet so horrified by my surroundings. This eccentric family with its unique way of living drew me in from page one. It's amazing just how differently children can see the world but as they grow the childlike innocence becomes shocking reality. Jeannette did a wonderful job with her vivid memories and personalization of each member of her family. Despite her father's faults, he was shockingly funning with his tales of gold hunting, mob investigations and the FBI on his trail. Jeannette's mother was equally compelling with her art ambitions and quirky personality. I would have liked to seen a picture of some of her paintings in the book. This book is being passed around by family members and several can't stop talking about it. I've highly recommend it for book clubs because its a great conversation piece. I look forward to reading more by this wonderful author. I would also like to add that I'm glad Jeannette has all of her fingers intact.

But his annoyance of having Whitney by his side becomes a mutual attraction as the pair come face to face with evil of the worst kind.

Heather Graham has created a gripping story bringing to life Jack the Ripper and his famed past. SACRED EVIL delves into the city's historic underbelly set amongst a movie production that seems all too real. SACRED EVIL is a good read with all the necessary ingredients, romance, horror, mystery and mayhem. A must read.

Since childhood, Mike Adams has had a guilty conscience about the accidental death of his best friend Carl. After arranging a play date with Carl at his home, Mike's family was called out of town due to a death in the family. The Adams' servant who answered the door sent young Carl away in the middle of a raging snow storm. Carl's mom dropped Carl off on her way to an appointment, and was not scheduled to return for several hours. Carl decides to walk home. Carl takes a short cut through Fanny's Farm.. Thinking that the pond was frozen solid Carl begins to cross the pond, and the semi-frozen pond cracks. Carl goes under and drowns. When the Adams family returns home, it several days before Mike learns of his buddy's death. Carl's death is not spoken of in the Adams' home and Mike's knowledge of what happened is limited to information garnered from conversations that overhears.

When Mike returns to the family mansion, with his own family, and begins asking questions, unexplained events begin to happen. After the occurrence of a number of inexplicable events, Mike begins to suspect that his elderly neighbors the Grays are connected to both Carl's drowning and the strange events occurring at his home.

"The Pond" is a rated PG tale of suspense. The lack of violence, explicit sex, and profanity makes "The Pond" an enjoyable read for young adults as well as mature adults. The paranormal ending was a surprising twist. Paranormal and Fantasy are very popular among young adult readers. The author maintains suspense throughout the story by slowly doling out information.

A Massachusetts couple were forced to call 911 after they entered a corn maze just before sunset and were unable to exit the maze before darkness fell.

The couple entered the maze at Connors Farm just north of Boston with their infant and when the farm shut down and bugs descended the parents decided to call 911.

During the dispatch conversation the mom said:

“I’m stuck at Connors Farm. I’m really scared. It’s really dark and we’ve got a 3-week-old,” while adding, ”I don’t know what made us do this. Oh, my goodness. The mosquitoes are eating us alive, and I never took my daughter out, this is the first time. Never again. This is embarrassing.”

Her husband then chimed in by telling the dispatcher:

“I can see lights over there, but we can’t get there. We’re smack in the middle of the corn field.”

Thankfully the family was found quickly and removed from the 8-10 acres maze.

It should be noted that Connor Farms urges people to enter the maze no later than one hour before closing time and they explain that passing through the corn maze typically takes 45 minutes.

The design firm who created the maze for the farm says it’s the first time they have heard of police needing to rescue someone from inside a corn maze.

Personally I would find a night time corn maze to be far more fun than a daytime maze, then again I would be wearing insect repellent and wouldn’t have a 3-month-old child with me. Would you prefer a daytime or nighttime corn maze challenge?

A Double Edged Sword

Have you ever visited a friend or relative over a weekend or school break? I think most of us have and look back on the memories fondly. While the main character, Mike in “The Pond” wasn’t away from home during his childhood years, it seemed as if he was due to his parents’ absence from his day to day life. So, the appeal of having a farm next door and other children to play with after school was largely a type of vacation for Mike.

When I wrote about his childhood, it was interesting to combine two features of his life. One being, that he loved playing with his best friend and spending time on the farm next door with a couple that fostered several children, who became built-in playmates! The other side of it being that he was a very lonely little boy as his parents had careers and were scarcely at home. He came from a life of privilege which carried a double edged sword of being lonely.

While the twists and turns in “The Pond” reveal the vulnerability of his being alone, it also gave way to his appreciation and enjoyment of those moments that were supreme childhood joy.

How do you think like a writer? I have a quick, easy test to determine the answer. Have you ever been driving (or riding) past a neighborhood and noticed some interesting homes? Some people may admire the design, structure or large backyard etc, while a writer may wonder who is inside this home? What is their life like? Are their children in the home? Are they happy? Sad? You get the idea. All of these elements are questions that can develop into a novel. Try it sometime! You may be writing your first novel without even realizing it!

To make matters worse, Nina is ignored when she tells of a peeking tom looking through her bedroom window. Even the cops don't take her seriously. So when the stalker breaks in and attacks her, everyone acts surprised, even though the warning signs were already there but discounted. The attack leaves a stain in young Nina's heart as people around her avoid what happened, including her own father. As Nina grows, she tries to come to grips with what happened, but the effect of the attack is ever present. This becomes evident in her personal life as she seeks solace in the arms of abusers and rapists. Nina is petite, seemingly frail. But the gutsy woman trains in karate and faces down college professors and crude classmates to advocate for women's rights. Nina takes on violent youth in a group home, almost being raped in the process. Though life's knocks take their toll on Nina, she is a survivor. In the process Nina will find herself and the peace she longs for. She learns to forgive and in the forgiveness, learns to love herself just as she is.

GRIP is a wonderful memoir. Nina Hamberg is as honest as they come. She holds nothing back as she reveals the horrors in her life along with the triumphs. Not only was her book entertaining, but it reveals just how vulnerable human nature can be. I found the book refreshing and wonderfully written. I would highly recommend it and look forward to seeing more works from this wonderful author.

Where do you go when you Die?

When I was young, I was always told that when you die, there was a place in heaven for each of us if we were kind and generous to others.

It’s a nice thought and I’m one of many that believe in that concept. However, it does make you wonder once you pass on, where exactly do you go? Some people believe that once you expire, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. It’s just a matter of becoming part of the earth. I tend to think there is more to the other side. Why? It just seems that people who lapse into a clinical death will awaken again and describe such wonderful images and the relatives and friends that meet them. It sounds so wonderful. Yet, there are those who experience the same clinical death and tell horrifying experiences that makes me shudder. Why do different people see different things? Those types of questions won’t be answered until we experience it for ourselves.

Then, there is the occult side of things. That is what intrigues me as a writer. You are probably very familiar with this phenomenon. You know, the ghosts rattling chains in the attic and feeling the chill of a visitor from beyond as they hover around you. Writers are a strange lot at times…we are the ones that will drive by on a country road and see a cottage perched by a lake in the twilight and see a family inside, living their lives. What is the first thing a does? They ask a question, “I wonder what they are talking about? What is their life like? Are they happy? Do they have secrets?”

Funny, that’s just how “The Pond” came to be.

Subliminal events that evoke feelings of "Hometown"

Summers always remind me of celebrations and gatherings especially when I was a kid. The frequency just seemed to naturally come in quick succession. There’s Mayday, the last day of school, summer camp, Fourth of July, country fairs and family vacations. All of these events make me think of warm weather and good times.

As I was writing “The Pond,” I wanted to build upon the idea of creating an ambiance that spoke to the memories of home that we all share. After all, if readers can’t relate to the subject of your story, then the story will be spoken but never heard. One of those memories for me was going to the fair each year. The whiff of cotton candy and candied apples while walking well-worn paths to the Ferris wheel and other rides all come flooding back to me. I am betting that you recall the same general memories too. Those types of memories are what help to shape a story like “The Pond.”

I’ll be writing more posts about “relate-able” events and memories because I think they are an important part in telling a story that has plotlines and situations that are horrifying. Most people don’t experience some of the events that Michael Adams and his family did in their new home. Tying the common thread among us helps to bring the reader along for the ride and experience a roller coaster of emotions.

Meeting up with Childhood Friends

Everyone begins life as a child. There are key components of our personalities that have always been and there are traits we have acquired either through life experience or through the people we have known. The end result is a hodge-podge of qualities that one could never foresee and some that have been intact the moment we drew our first breath. All of these qualities are the ones that we have collected during childhood, teenage hood, and finally adulthood.

While it seems safe to wonder if some acquaintances have ever changed at all, these thoughts are only a portion of the emotions that one goes through when moving “back home.” Those childhood friends that were beloved and those who tormented us at the playground are now law-abiding, tax-paying neighbors, some with children of their own. Mike, the main character in “The Pond” finds himself going through these experiences and trying to make sense of his thoughts.
He struggles to find a glimpse or glimmer of recognition of the child he remembered going to school with and only finds a middle-aged man sitting in his dental chair feeling strangely vulnerable on many levels. The vulnerability may seem to be on a childlike level, but after moving the conversation from the school yard to the dental office, the tone and the conversation take on a darker hue.

The innocence of childhood may be buried at the bottom of that Pond.

Fear of the Unknown

Have you ever noticed that sometimes the most frightening images is not so much the vision of someone with a gun or some other obvious threat? I find that it is the “subtle” nuances that can be more effective. For example, the movie “Silence of the Lambs” was particularly frightening because of Hannibal Lector. His calm, yet menacing communication style inflicted more terror for Clarice than if he were to hold her at gunpoint. Why? Because he is a sociopath and thinks much differently than a “normal” person. She can’t anticipate or prepare for his actions which leave her all the more vulnerable. And, sometimes that can be much more frightening than trying to escape or fight off an attacker.

When writing “The Pond” I tried to incorporate several fabrics of terror. Hearing things in the house that are unexplained, noises that are unexplained, friendly personalities of neighbors who present a secret dark side. The idea of unexplained, mysterious or the unknown can present more anxiety for people than expected results.

Then aside from danger situations involving people, there are the natural disasters or an act of God such as tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes or tsunamis. These come without warning and many times, can occur without people realizing just how close the danger is lurking. The usual exception are animals. I remember that I was working on "The Pond" and out of the corner of my eye, my dog woke out of a sound sleep and looked intently at the door. Her ears were perked and her nose was attempting to smell what was around the corner. As I watched her, I listened closely to my surroundings. I couldn't hear anything unusual. However, within 10 minutes, a nasty thunderstorm with dangerous lightening descended upon my area of town.

If I didn’t have my dog to alert me to a weather change, I would have been caught off guard. If I were the type of person to be afraid of lightening storms, I would have been terrified! The storm came quickly and made an impressive presence. And, somehow my dog was able to hear and or smell the unexpected. This is true of most animals; horses, cows, dogs, cats etc. are usually very sensitive to the unknown such as storms. They can also be sensitive to potential danger from people.

As a result of my experience with my dog, I wrote about animals and their “extra sensory perception” to danger(s). Be on the lookout for these animals in my book, “The Pond.”

Requesting Atonement from the Dead

From the time we are children to the time that we are adults, the one constant is that people are born and people will eventually die. Whether they die from natural causes or from some other means, we will eventually come to know people that will die before us.

I’ve known some people that have had difficulty saying goodbye to those who have left this earth. Mostly because there may have been “unfinished business” between them. Did one of you forget to say, “I love you” or “I’m sorry?” Silent words and unfinished business can be very frustrating and painful for those who feel that premature death robbed them of a necessary moment.

In “The Pond,” the main character, Mike; has this nagging issue with a childhood friend who lost his life in the pond. No matter how long ago the accident occurred, the feeling and guilt never leaves because there was unfinished business in Mike’s mind.

Thus, the torment Mike felt as a child has grown with him to adulthood. Guilt never leaves until it is resolved. Haven’t you noticed that people will sometimes request atonement from those dearly departed? It’s a way of trying to finish the business and lighten the load of guilt upon one’s shoulders.

What comes to Mind?

They say that our senses such as sight, smell, touch and taste can evoke memories of our past. For example, what do you think of when you smell apple pie? Breathe in deeply and smell the cinnamon, nutmeg and Granny Smith apples. What feeling or memory does it conjure for you? When I think of homemade apple pie, I am immediately transported back to my childhood when my grandmother made them for me. So, I would have to say the smell of apple pie brings to me a comforting feeling; spending time with my grandmother and eating those delicious pies!

While the apple pie aroma reminded me of my grandmother, some might get the impression of a mother baking for her family or perhaps a friendly neighbor offering a pie to new neighbors. Any one of these thoughts that come to mind when we think of “apple pie.” There is also the automatic association as “American as Apple Pie.” I believe it is safe to say that all of these images provide the following thoughts of comfort, friendliness of a neighbor, family and security.

While I was writing “The Pond,” I decided to use this train of thought in the beginning of my book. The comfort of a childhood home, a friendly neighbor baking a pie to welcome a family to the neighborhood. I wanted to evoke an image that would make the reader automatically associate a definite perception of one of the characters. The idea would be to gravitate that character from a comforting and pleasant image to a dark personality.

A person who bakes a pie couldn't possibly have a hidden, dark personality yet to be seen; could they?

Moving and the Affect on Children

Have you ever moved? Sure, at one point or another, we all move at least once or twice and for others, even more. For adults, it consists of wanting or needing to move. The usual tools of boxes, masking tape, box cutter,tissue and newspapers will be in your near future if you have made the decision to move. Whether it is across town or international; it can be a pain. There is packing, unpacking, learning our way in a new city and making new friends. It takes a bit of time to get acclimated and then moving becomes a distant memory.

What is it like for children? Leaving the only place they’ve ever known since coming into this world is incredibly difficult for them. The next bone of contention is leaving best friends, leaving their school and every other familiar place or person that they’ve grown accustomed to. Children who experiencing moving are also experiencing a major life change. It’s difficult because they have never experienced change before.

Change is associated with facing the unknown to a certain extent. The routine and consistency is now being changed. Children are creatures of habit. The trauma of moving is usually alleviated after they make new friends, become familiar with school and establish new routines. The fictional thriller, “The Pond” introduces the idea of leaving a childhood home. Not only leaving that home, but leaving unfinished business of mourning a best friend. This “unfinished business” picks up right where it left off when the child returns as an adult with his own family to live in his childhood home. What was the best time in your Childhood?

I remember when I was growing up; I would spend my summers with my best friend in the country. It seemed that my own life, worries and other cares were miles away. The days began early with a big breakfast and then outdoors until dusk. There were so many things to do and places to go explore.
Chores that my friend considered to be mundane were new and exciting to me. I learned how to milk a cow, brush down a horse and ride bareback. After a full day of morning chores, riding horses and swimming in a creek, the days flew like wildfire. It was this exhilaration of experiencing new things and carefree days that prompted me to write about it in “The Pond.” I still remember those days, even now. And, I’m betting that you remember them as well. They were the best, weren’t they?

Guilt

Definition: (noun) A term denoting an unpleasant feeling associated with blame; bad conscience over responsibility.

Such a simple term and definition that affects countless people all over the world. While guilt is a horrible feeling and it often makes a great plot line in a novel! In my book, The Pond; you will find a boy who friend drowns in a pond. An unfortunate, terrible thing for a child to die. Not long after the event, the boy and his family move out of town. Twenty-five years later, the boy has become a man and moves back to his childhood home with his family. Being in the setting of his childhood causes him to ponder about his friend’s death. What exactly happened? How did it happen? Could he have done anything to prevent it? See? Guilt subtly sneaks in as an underlying, yet prominent theme.

Guilt has the power and strength to invade most anyone with an Achilles heel. The slightest bit of vulnerability in our psyche provides a perfect and shortest path to feelings of guilt. Often times, feelings need to be explained or described. I am willing to bet that everyone has felt the pangs of guilt at least once in their life. And, the feelings were so overwhelmingly unpleasant, that no one wants to experience it again. In fact, anyone else that is suffering from guilt is often pitied by others.

Interestingly enough, the main character’s guilt is suddenly causing things to go bump in the night. Pick up a copy of my book, The Pond and rediscover guilt and fear.

Things that go BUMP in the night (or day)

Do you remember the first time you spent the night alone? Perhaps it was in a big home or maybe an apartment. Were you scared? I think everyone has an unsettling feeling when they know they are alone. Suddenly, it’s as if you can hear every creak and groan of the home settling and the wind sounds a bit more mysterious.

I have a friend that recently did some house-sitting for her boss while she was out of town. She called me and we chatted on the phone for awhile and then she decided to call it a night. She began turning out the various lamps and lights on her way out of the room and made her way up the stairs to the guest bedroom.

Just as she was turning the corner at the top of the stairs, she got the distinct feeling that someone was right behind her. Have you ever had that feeling? I know I have. But, I’m not sure what causes it. Is it fear? Is it the ghost of your Aunt Mattie from the past paying a visit? In any event, I know this feeling well.

When I was writing “The Pond,” I wondered what would happen if we could easily communicate with the dearly departed. Especially if it involved unresolved feelings or emotions. The idea was intriguing to me. Would the dearly departed be forgiving? Or, do they hold a grudge?

I guess it depends on what really happened. I wonder if the main character, Mike remembers the entire accident of his best friend? It might be why things go bump in the night…or day.

Are You Affected by Local Legends where a Young Boy drowned in a Pond?

When I was growing up, legend around town was that a certain old bridge hidden by foliage from the road was “haunted.” I don’t know if it is fact, but people’s curiosity confirmed that if nothing else, the mystique was there. Legend was that a young mother was walking over a bridge one day, lost her footing and accidentally dropped her child in the water below. And, according to the locals, her ghost walks the bridge searching for her child. Curious onlookers (usually teenagers) still visit the bridge and listen for the sounds of her steps.

This type of folklore has always intrigued me. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to put this type of theme in “The Pond.” The idea that a legend can sustain and thrive in this day and age simply by word of mouth from generation to generation rekindles the art form of storytelling. Think back to your past; do you remember folklore in your hometown? When you read “The Pond” it will make you wonder whether the folklore is fact or fiction.

Thalassophobia - Fear of Ponds

Have you ever experienced a phobia? If you have, you know that it is a very unnerving experience and can be quite frightening. There are all types of phobias and they can be developed at any age, although most are due to a traumatic event in childhood. I’m sure we’ve all experienced some form of phobia; to name a few:

• Fear of flying
• Fear of the number 13
• Fear of elevators
• Fear of closed in places
• Fear of heights and finally;
• Fear of large bodies of water such as oceans, lakes and ponds.

Are there any remedies for these phobias? The best medicine is psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, or counseling.

Oh, another remedy might be to move yourself and family back to your childhood home and find out how and why your best friend died in that pond.

Panic Attacks

According to Wikipedia, the definition of a “Panic Attack” is as follows:

Panic attacks are very sudden, discrete periods of intense anxiety, mounting physiological arousal, fear, stomach problems and discomfort that are associated with a variety of somatic and cognitive symptoms. The onset of these episodes is typically abrupt, and may have no obvious triggers.[1]

If you have ever suffered from one of these attacks, you will quickly discover that there is nothing psychosomatic about this disorder. It seems that at one time or another, everyone has experienced some form of a panic attack. I know some friends who have difficulty with this horrible attack and the experience can be terrifying.
The type of attacks can vary by including one or a combination of feelings or physical agitation:
Trembling, fear, rapid breathing, feeling of having a heart attack, heart racing, sweating and mind racing and a host of other types of emotions and physical feelings.

Sometimes, describing a fearful situation can bring on a panic attack…in my book, “The Pond,” I wrote the main characters to have similar experiences with panic attacks that they never had before. Why? Perhaps just reading about a panic attack can bring one on. The only cure is to buy a copy of the book, “The Pond” and read it!

The Art of Raising Foster Children

When a couple agrees to be foster parents, what exactly should they expect? Certainly, it’s not quite the same as rearing your own children through day to day childhood experiences. The known fact is that fostering is temporary. So, how do foster parents treat these children? As if they are their own? Or, do they step back and parent with detached emotion? I believe the first idea is the desired result.
In the story of “The Pond,” the sweet, next door neighbors, who take this responsibility on, come up with ideas to occupy these children. These foster parents who are firmly rooted in their community and moral values could not have come at a better time for these children in need. As we know, it is difficult to place foster children in homes such as these. And, to hope for parents who are patient, loving and provide the guidance that is so needed in their lives is just a dream come true.

Any case manager stopping by to observe the home, parents and children surely would give extremely high marks. It’s all what we hope for…but is it what the children actually get?

Can't Judge a Book by its Cover

Have you ever wondered where parables come from? One of my favorites is “Never judge a book by its cover.” One of the reasons it catches my eye, aside from being a novelist, is that it’s a phrase that brings meaning on many levels and conjures a mental image to go with it.

I’m sure everyone has picked up a book with a great cover and began reading it; only to discover that the story was poorly written or just a bad story in general! Then, there are those gems that have a plain book cover and is a real page turner. That’s where the reference becomes interesting. For example, in my book, “The Pond,” I purposely chose characters that were seemingly warm, gentle, friendly and engaging. Those characters upon first glance were wonderful until I created their “true” personalities of dark, rough and seething anger only to be discovered through time and consequences.

Good writing is creating a good story. What I hope is great writing, is creating characters with depth and other layers of personality traits that become memorable and most importantly, real. I hope I was able to accomplish that in “The Pond.

Dentistry and the Vulnerability of being the Patient

As I was plotting and planning the characters and plot of “The Pond,” I began to wonder about what vocation Mike Adams, the main character would have.

Taking into account that his family was well-to-do when he was growing up, I considered the usual employment ideas; doctor, lawyer, stockbroker, entrepreneur etc. Then I began to wonder about what some consider to be a step below a doctor, either a dentist or a chiropractor.

For some reason, dentistry provides interesting character development. Consider the number of people who have dental phobias and movies that have perpetuated that fear even further by creating films like Marathon Man. Watching Dustin Hoffman’s character is particularly horrifying as he is tortured with dental procedures.
While I didn’t push the envelope to that extreme, I did plant the suggestion by having Adams be a dentist. And, surprise! One day, he is paid a visit by long lost childhood friend, Bill Simpson. Discussions of the past and certain neighbors cause Simpson to feel vulnerable as “Little Mikey Adams is messing with his teeth.”

Some fears are never outgrown. They simply intensify with age.

What Comes Next?

That is the most asked question I get about writing fiction! Most people can’t imagine sitting down in front of a laptop and writing a story from the depths of your imagination. While “The Pond” is fiction, the beginning was actually based on an actual event. The idea of I wonder what would happen when one of the children grew up? Would he wonder about possible motives? Perhaps the innocence of the event in his memory would tarnish with age? There were quite a few “what ifs?” that I found to be interesting.

I think that is how most writers construct a fiction book; by being inquisitive and have the imagination to allow your mind to conjure a plot. The revisions, changes and tweaks will most definitely be many, but at least there is the proverbial lump of clay to massage that will eventually morph into a polished, piece of art. The idea of letting your imagination run wild is both exhilarating and necessary. Sometimes I think young writers may be at a disadvantage in this area. It seems that as technology continues to explode, children become more interested in computer games and gadgets than reading or developing their imagination. I loved reading Laura Ingalls Wilder books as I was growing up, and am greatly influenced by her writing style. She was a master of telling a story, no matter how simple or delicate.

Have You Made Peace with YOUR Demons?

No matter how wonderful our childhoods may have been, there are still certain memories, places, people, relatives or experiences that cause some anxiety for us. Now, consider if we’ve had difficult childhoods laced with abuse, bullying, or any number of unpleasant experiences. How would you react if someone told you, “You will move back into your childhood home.”

Does it give you a warm fuzzy? Or does it make you feel ill? For those of us who have suffered traumatic or unpleasant childhoods, the idea will be dismissed immediately. If you’re one of those fortunate people that had a wonderful childhood, the idea sounds extremely tempting.

I thought it was an interesting concept. Why? Because in my book, “The Pond,” the main character feels that overall, he had a pleasant childhood. Of course, it wouldn’t be real life unless he experienced some hardships. But, his overall opinion of his childhood was pleasant. What if he moves back into his childhood home and begins to recall repressed memories? Did they happen? Or, is he simply feeling strange about living in his childhood home as a man?
Either way, the idea is intriguing. Memories can be sparked from a scent, a visual scene, temperature and a variety of other ways. Going back home may mean facing new memories which will certainly cause reflection. Will it change the core of your belief system? That’s something to consider. Find out how the main character in “The Pond” handles this situation.

The Trials & Tribulations of Newlyweds

For those of you that are married, do you remember the first several months of wedded bliss? When I think of newlyweds, the classic movie, “Barefoot in the Park” comes to mind. It’s a cute film about a couple that begins life blissfully happy with pollyanna dreams and as time passes, they become settled into real life.

What is real life? The usual points of contention which is how to spend money, bills, credit card debt, household duties and parenting issues. Oh, and a small issue known as problems with the in-laws! This problem has been parodied on countless television sitcoms such as Roseanne, The Honeymooners, The Dick Van Dyke show and more. While television has poked fun at this issue, the problem can be very real.
As a writer, I took this common issue and decided to use it to build tension in my book, “The Pond.” Although the mother-in-law is briefly mentioned in the beginning of the book, I find it lends the type of emotion I wanted for the opening. And, the fact that the main character and his family are moving back into his mother’s home causes the daughter-in-law additional anxiety. Of course, her husband fails to see the true extent of his mother’s short comings which makes it all the more exasperating. Can she remove the stigma of living in her mother-in-law’s home? Can she make it her own? Can she finally put her in-law issues to rest? Find out by reading my book, “The Pond.”

The Circle of Life and the ashes of innocence

As adults, we have learned the process of grieving for those who have passed away. The process of being born, living life and dying is often referred to as The Circle of Life, as it is a constant . Someone, somewhere is being born, someone, somewhere is living and someone, somewhere is dying. And, it is also one of the most difficult aspects of being a human being – especially if someone’s life is taken tragically. Especially that of a child. It’s very difficult for an adult to deal with a child’s death, and I know it is extraordinarily difficult for other children to grapple with.

As an author, you will find bits and pieces of my life experiences in my books. In “The Pond,” I wrote about a boy who drowned in an almost frozen pond. As I was writing the story, I was taken back to the first time I experienced a classmate’s death as a child. I felt the confusion, shock and disbelief. Yet, I wasn’t able to verbalize these cumbersome emotions yet. Why? Because I was a child trying to understand something that seemed so much bigger than me.

I was one step closer to being an adult and it pained me to realize that my childhood innocence was one step further behind me. I guess I felt as if I was watching the ashes of my innocence smolder.

As a child, my family lived next door to a family who had a little girl around my age. I was elated! A “built-in best friend” was as close as 20 paces away! To my delight, our bedroom windows faced each other which allowed us to talk even though we were both at home!

I often wondered about my new best friend and what it must feel like to be an only child. While most children from large families complain about having to share toys, rooms and wear hand-me-downs, my friend would wear her clothes once with no one to inherit them. She would play with her toys until she grew weary of them, she would be alone in her room with no one to talk to before dropping off to sleep at night. Of all the things that only children encounter, my little friend missed talking to someone at night. Whether it was to talk about school, piano lessons, or cute boys who carried her books home from school. It brought comfort to her as she gazed into a vast sky with twinkling stars. You can imagine her excitement when we discovered we could talk to each other from our bedrooms.

One night as we leaned out of our bedroom windows, we watched shooting stars exploding in the sky. I asked my friend if it was difficult to make new friends when she moved. She thought for a moment and replied, “Sometimes it is…when that happens, I just talk to my best friend n the world. He always understands.”

“Who is your best friend in the world?” I inquired. “Mr. Nobody. He’s always with me, he never leaves and he talks to me at night when I am lonely.”

At the time, I didn’t understand fully the obvious make-believe friend reference. But, a couple of years later when she and her family moved away again, I realized just how important this coping mechanism was to her. I wonder about my childhood friend, I suppose that is why I wrote about an only child in my book, “The Pond.”

Mr. Nobody was certainly a “Somebody” to her.

Strange Neighbors and How They Can Affect Your Home Life

We’ve all been there…either you tour one of the apartment homes or you go house-hunting and see the “perfect home” for you or your family. Then you run, not walk to pay the deposit, earnest money, whatever is required to secure the home of your dreams.Everything appears to be all that you imagined and more. Q) Tamera, why did you become a Writer/Author?

A) Ever since I was a little girl, I was fascinated by books and loved to read. My grandmother Gladis Evans was a poet and I was always fascinated that her poems were published. She inspired me to write. I love to write and have a great imagination. I love bringing stories to life.

Q) What types of books do you like to write?

A) Originally, I liked writing romance, mainly historical…which I still like to tinker with. But I found that I like to dig deeper into my imagination and write mysteries or thrillers. I like to make people squirm.

Q)Have you written any other books since “The Pond” ? Any other writing projects in process?

A) I have written a few books, but my main project is a book called WRECKER. I also am putting the finishing touches on a book called, THE SERPERNT’S KISS.

Q) What are other types of jobs have you held in the past?

A) In my teens, I was a waitress. From there, I went to work at AMP Incorporated. I started on the bottom level with file keeping and then moved up to a data input. After having my third child, I helped my husband with his contracting business and became self-employed.

Q) Besides writing, what else do you like to do?

A) Besides reading, I like gardening, walking and like to play softball. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed watching my kids in their various sports. My daughter likes to write and is a natural poet. In the fourth grade, she won first place in a poetry contest held in Berks County.

Q) If you can live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Why?

A)I would never live anywhere but in the United States. I loved my country and I am proud of its history. I’d like to visit all the states…but alas time is short.

Q) Do you have any pets?

A) Right now, we have a cat named Emma. We decided to let her have a litter of kittens so my kids could experience nature firsthand. Emma is the proud mother of five kittens. We already have several promising homes for them. My daughter always has a pet of some kind, usually a hamster. Right now she wants a horse. Help!

Q) Where did you go on your last vacation?

A) Last vacation was spent at the NJ shore. We had a great week of weather and had a lot of fun.

Q) Do you have a favorite color?

A) Not really, but I like to wear dark colors. Sometimes, I wonder why? LOL

Q) Favorite movies?

A) I love the movie, Far and Away (since I’m part Irish) and of course, The Notebook. Thriller wise, I like What Lies Beneath.

Q) Favorite books?

"The Pond". Is this a trick question? No, really, my favorite romance is Shanna. I read a little of Koontz (Frankenstein series). My favorite inspirational book, Not My Will.

Q) What type of music do you like to listen to?

A) I like soft music, soft rock and a bit of country.

Q) Steak or Seafood?

A) Def. Steak. Can’t beat it.

Q) Do you have a favorite meal you like to have as often as you can?

A) I love spaghetti, but my waistline doesn’t. I am trying to stick to lean meats and lots of vegetables. I admit, I have a sweet tooth. I think you could call me a professional dieter, up and down, depending on the season.

Can You Really Go Home Again?

Most people have fond memories of their childhood. However, there are some that the thought of remembering or re-living these memories is simply horrific. What if you remember a wonderful childhood full of wonderful memories and find out as an adult that some memories were repressed or confused with other events?Such is the case with the main character, “Mike” from Tamera Lawrence’s new thriller, “The Pond.” While reading this book, it gave me pause for thought; can you really go back home again? As an adult, will you see through the eyes of your inner child and see life as you did back then? The idea is intriguing to say the least and is firmly planted within this story.

Just as the main character begins to realize that his memories were not quite as he remembered, he begins to notice other recollections of his childhood that appear to be inaccurate. And, it isn’t easy as dismissing it as “not being that important”. The hook in this story is that Mike has moved his family to his childhood home that he inherited from his mother. His past is glaringly on display for all to see, much to his chagrin. He has a daughter around the same age he was when he lived in this home 25 years ago. Instead of watching her enjoy the same facets of his own childhood residence, he begins to notice that she doesn’t share the same ubiquitous appreciation for this home as he had.

Additionally, Mike’s wife, Donna begins to see a glimmer of beloved memories recounted by her husband that are not so accurate. The next door neighbors, the Grays were remembered as friendly and genuinely fond of Mike. In fact, Mrs. Gray even made Mike’s favorite dessert, pie just for him. Yet, when Mike’s wife meets the couple upon moving in, she finds them to be odd which piques her interest in Mike’s past. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but something seemed awry. Even acknowledging the aloofness and rudeness of his mother toward her was practically impossible for Mike. He simply dismissed it as being overprotective because he was an only child. If he told her once, he told her a thousand times, let it go, it’s in the past. Apparently, this became the unspoken mantra for his childhood memories.

Why does he have such Pollyanna memories? The mind is complex and will offer tainted memories to replace true memories if the anguish or trauma is too great for a person. That psychological fact has been proven. Is this the case with Mike’s own childhood? There was a tragic event that happened on “The Pond” that caused him grief. When he begins looking for answers and asks questions of his trusted neighbors, he is warned to: Let it go, it’s in the past. Is he being punished? Did he repress any memories? How could he find out? Time will tell as one reads further into this thriller.

Winter Cold and Snow Can Bring Fun....... Danger too!

If you live in an area where winter cold brings ice and snow onto our lakes and ponds, you think of the fun of ice skating, ice fishing, ice hockey and the feeling you get walking across a frozen pond.

Unfortunately, along with the fun, you are also well aware of the possibilities of dangers that may also lurk. Expressions have even adopted these dangers as a warning to fit any situation. “You are skating on thin ice!” And, one of the most iconic Holiday movies begins with a group of boys sledding onto a pond with the assumption that it is frozen solid. In “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the main character saves his brother from drowning and loses his hearing in one of his ears. Is it an underlying metaphor to underscore the moral of the story? Perhaps, perhaps not.

The Novel, “The Pond” starts with details of a horrific frozen pond accident that is difficult to shake as a reader (since the incident really happened). As I was writing this book, even I found myself wincing at the characters and the experiences each one of them had to go through. I think you will find this book interesting as you learn more about each character and the demons they possess.
